Hyderabad: The Hyderabad police on Monday registered a case against Madhavi Latha, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s Hyderabad Parliament constituency candidate, for allegedly trespassing into a polling station and asking some Muslim women voters to remove their burqa and reveal their identity, people familiar with the matter said.

In the video, which went viral, Madhavi Latha is heard specifically asking burqa-clad Muslim women to remove their ‘niqab’ or face veil for verification.

“Uthaiye aap (lift this up),” Latha is heard saying to the women, gesturing towards their veils as she checks their voter ID cards.

The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act. The Hyderabad Collector’s office has confirmed in a post on X that a case against the BJP candidate has been registered in Malakpet Police Station.

“A case is registered in Malakpet Police Station against Smt Madhavi Latha, Contesting candidate, BJP under sections 171C, 186, 505(1)(c) of IPC and Section 132 of the Representation of the People Act,” he wrote.

Responding to the issue, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy said: “I have not seen (the video) but BJP is simply trying to polarise Muslim votes to win but all these issues are going to help Asaduddin Owaisi. It is not going to benefit BJP…”
