Four earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 struck Nepal in quick succession and were felt in parts of northern India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the National Center for Seismology (NCS) said on Tuesday.
The first earthquake of magnitude 4.6 struck western Nepal at 2:25 pm at a depth of 10 km, followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 6.2 at 2:51 pm, NCS officials said.
At 3:06 and 3:19 pm, two more earthquakes (magnitudes 3.6 and 3.1) struck the same area, with epicenter depths of 15 kilometers and 10 kilometers, respectively.
The epicenter of the most powerful earthquake was 206 km southeast of the pilgrimage city of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.
People in Delhi and the National Capital Region felt strong tremors after the second earthquake and came out of their offices and high-rise residential buildings. Delhi Police appealed to them not to panic.
“We hope you are all safe. Please get out of your buildings to a safe place, but do not panic. Don't use the elevator! For any emergency assistance, dial 112,'' a post on X said.
Tremors were also felt in Chandigarh, Jaipur and other parts of North India. The police control room in the pink city said there was no information yet about the damage.
