New Delhi: The Central Government has appointed ED Special Director Rahul Naveen as the acting Director of ED. Rahul Naveen will replace ED Chief Sanjay Kumar Mishra, whose tenure has ended. The order said that IRS officer Rahul Naveen is a 1993 batch officer. Rahul Naveen is working as the Chief Vigilance Officer of ED Headquarters. Now the Central Government has given him a big responsibility and made him the acting Director of ED. Now, until any officer is appointed as ED Chief, Rahul Naveen will hold the responsibility of this post.

Sanjay Kumar Mishra was appointed as the ED director in 2018, with his initial tenure set to end in November 2020. However, the Central Government gave him three extensions in service. The CVC Act was amended to extend his tenure. On July 27, the Supreme Court agreed to extend the tenure of Mishra till September 15, who was due to step down on July 31 as per the recent judgement.

A special bench of Justices BR Gavai, Vikram Nath and Sanjay Karol had ordered that under normal circumstances we would not entertain such an application... Keeping in mind the larger public interest, we extend the tenure of the ED Director to the post till September 15, 2023. Allow to remain.

However, the bench made it clear that it would not consider any other application from the Center seeking extension of his tenure. It said that Mishra will no longer hold the post from midnight of 15/16 September 2023.

At the beginning of the hearing, the bench asked whether the ED had no other competent authority to deal with the FATF review. Aren't you painting the picture that your entire department is filled with incompetent officers? You only have one officer? The bench asked whether this is not demoralizing the entire force?
