Delhi: At least 73 people were killed and 52 others injured in a fire that broke out in a multi-storey building in Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city. Migrants lived in this building.
Officials said it was not clear what caused the fire in the five-storey building in the center of the city.
A large number of emergency and rescue workers are at the scene as bodies are still being retrieved.
Robert Mulaudzi, a spokesman for the Johannesburg city emergency services, said the fire department received a call about a blaze at a building on Delvers and Alberts Street at about 1:30 a.m. late on Wednesday.
"We managed to put out the fire and evacuate people inside the building," Mulaudzi said.
He said that most of the injured in the accident had minor injuries. The fire destroyed the five-storey building, he said.
The spokesperson said that proper arrangements are being made to provide accommodation to the people rendered homeless due to the fire.
Mulaudzi said in a post on X that 73 bodies have been retrieved and 52 others have suffered burns and that the search and rescue operation is still ongoing. He said
the fire has been brought under control
A child is also included in the dead.
Mulaudzi said the death toll could rise.
People injured in the fire have been admitted to the hospital.
A Tanzanian citizen living near the building said that there must have been hundreds of people inside the building.
He said most of the residents in many buildings in the area are illegal immigrants from African countries who came to South Africa's economic hub in search of jobs.
