Moscow: At least 12 people were killed and dozens more injured in a fire at a filling station in Dagestan, Russia's Caucasus region, on Monday, the emergency situations ministry said.
"More than 60 people were injured in the fire in Makhachkala, 12 of them died," the ministry wrote on Telegram. Located on the Caspian Sea, Makhachkala is the capital of Dagestan.
According to the Russian "Izvestia" Telegram, citing eyewitnesses, the fire started in a car park and spread to the petrol station.
"After the explosion, everything fell on our heads and we couldn't see anything anymore,"said the unnamed witness.
A video posted by Ria Novosti on Telegram showed flames emanating from a building, followed by a massive explosion.
The ministry said the fire had spread over an area of about 600 square meters, (6,450 square feet) adding that 260 firefighters were deployed.
