NEW DELHI: The much-anticipated debate on a motion of no confidence in the Narendra Modi-led government will begin at 12 noon on Tuesday in the Lok Sabha. The proposal was tabled by Congress and backed by a newly formed Indian opposition bloc to force Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur state.
Prime Minister Modi will reply to the motion on Thursday (August 10).
Parliamentary sessions have been adjourned since the start of the monsoon session as opposition groups insisted that the prime minister make a statement in the plenary session of the House of Representatives.
A no-confidence motion is a formal proposal by the opposition in the Lok Sabha under Rule 198 of the Lok Sabha rules to express a lack of confidence in the ruling government. If the motion is passed, the ruling party must prove its majority in the Lok Sabha, or it will lead to the resignation of the government.
